Abstract

1,223,580. Manual and fluid-pressure brake operation; transmitting-mechanism. ALFRED TEVES G.m.b.H. 31 Oct., 1968 [15 Feb., 1968], No. 51603/68. Headings F2E and F2F. In a brake system for motor vehicles with disc or drum brakes or both, which are operable by an hydraulic service brake system, the brakes associated with either the front wheels or the rear wheels of the vehicle are also operable by a mechanical hand brake system, and a force-transmitting connection is provided between the hand brake system and the service brake system so that the hand brake system is capable of being brought into operation to augment the braking force supplied by the service brake system. Preferably, the force-transmitting connection comprises either a mechanical or an hydraulic linkage. The resilience of the hand brake system may be made optionally greater or smaller than the resilience of the service brake system. As shown, front disc brakes 1, 2 acting on brake discs 12, 13 are provided. Rear disc brakes 3, 4, acting on brake discs 14, 15, respectively, are also provided, and have also extra mechanical actuation in the form of a hand brake lever 7, a brake cable 8, a compensating roller 9, a brake cable 10, 10a and cable levers 11, 11a. The hydraulic system includes brake pedal 5 and master cylinder 6. The forcetransmitting connection is shown at 16 and has a forked end member 17 and an adjustable entraining member 18. In operation, when the driver depresses the brake pedal 5 and thus initiates the operation of the service brake, the mechanical hand brake system is normally included in the braking operation via the linkage 16-18. However, the force-transmitting connection may be attached to the service brake system with so much inoperative clearance, that when the service brake is actuated, even through the forcetransmitting connection is entrained, no braking force is transmitted to the mechanical brake until the inoperative clearance has been taken up. This applies especially if the hand brake system is applied to the front instead of the rear wheels. A brake booster governing both front and rear brakes may be provided in the hydraulic brake circuit (Fig. 2, not shown). Automatic slack-adjusters may be incorporated.
