Abstract

426,630. Vehicle brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and BROCK, D. T., Brock House, Langham Street, Gt. Portland Street, London. Aug. 31, 1933, No. 24229. [Class 103 (i)] The brake system of a vehicle comprises a hand-brake and a foot-brake and means, for example, a spring tending to apply the handbrake and means for holding it " off " the holding means being releasable by hand to apply the brake and also when the operating means of the foot-brake reaches a predetermined point. The hand-brake is thus applied when owing, for instance, to wear or mechanical or hydraulic failure an excessive movement has to be given to the pedal. A hydraulic footbrake is shown with a pedal 4 operating a master-cylinder 2. When the pedal reaches a predetermined point, a projection 41 thereon engages the lever 42 of a Bowden cable 44 thus disengaging a detent 51 pivoted on the handbrake lever 45 whereby this brake is applied by a spring 61. The detent 51 can also be released by a handle 52. A detent 57 controlled by a handle 58 is also provided for holding the hand-lever in an adjustable applied position. The brake shoes or equivalent of the two brakes may be the same. The operation of either or both brakes may give an electrical or other signal. According to the Provisional Specification an emergency brake may be applied or an indication be given when the travel of the operating means of the usual brake exceeds a predetermined amount or when a minimum pressure or volume of the operating fluid thereof is reached or when as by the stretching of a cable, the effective length of an element varies beyond predetermined limits.
