Abstract

463,249. Vehicle brakes. TAPP, E. T. J. Sept. 23, 1935, No. 26313. [Class 103 (i)] The brakes of a tractor and a trailer vehicle are operated by a common pedal &c. and the transmission for the trailer passes through the coupling the arrangement being such that the proportion of braking power between the two vehicles is varied by fore-and-aft movement of the trailer relatively to the tractor, the trailer brake application being accentuated and decreased respectively by overrun and separation of the trailer relatively to the tractor and the' tractor brake application being correspondingly decreased and increased. A swiveltree d pivoted at f on a plunger e is connected by links h, i to arms on cross-shafts c, c<1> operated by pedal b and hand-lever a respectively. The plunger e is connected by cable j to a push rod k slidable in the tractor portion of the coupling and engaging a lever l on the trailer connected by rod n to the trailer brakes. Rods p, q are connected to the tractor brakes. The brakes may thus first be applied lightly by the hand lever, and the application be completed by the pedal. In order that the pedal stroke may be sufficient to apply the brakes completely by the pedal alone, the swivel-tree may have a stop g to prevent its movement in such an application and thus transmit the pedal movement without reduction. The plunger e may be connected to the swivel-tree at a point nearer to the hand connection than to the pedal connection. When the trailer brake has been manually applied, relative movement between the trailer and tractor turns the lever l due to its abutment on the rod k and thus effects a variation of the trailer brake pressure and an inverse variation of the tractor brake pressure. The extent of this action is determined by screw adjustment of the rod n and the adjustment may be such that the tractor brakes may be applied lightly and the trailer brake be applied only by overrun of the trailer. The coupling may be such as described in Specification 463,247 the push-rod k being mounted in the cross-head of that coupling and make contact with a lever pivoted on the forked draw-bar when the cross-head is embraced by the claws.
