Abstract

465,843. Adjusting brake mechanism. GALLUSSER, H. Jan. 2, 1936, No. 184. Convention date, June 3, 1935. [Class 103 (i)] A device of the kind comprising a pair of split nuts engaging a toothed rod in a brake transmission and which is adapted to compensate both for insufficient and excessive slack comprises a tubular rod 28 connected to the lever 5 and provided with a chamber 17 containing the split nut 14. The chamber and rod are slidable in a sleeve 9 divided by an abutment 21 to form a chamber containing the split-nut 15 and its abutment 20. A spring 22 seats on the abutment 20 and a stronger spring 25 on the chamber 17. The toothed rod 8 connected to the brakes passes freely through the end of the sleeve 9. The nut 14 is normally held disengaged from the rod by conical surfaces 23, 24, Fig. 3, on the abutment 21 and chamber 17. A projection 13 on the sleeve 9 is adapted to engage a stop 11 on a link 12 connected to the lever 4. When the brakes are applied the movement of lever 5 is transmitted to the rod 8 at first through rod 28, spring 25, sleeve 9, spring 22, abutment 20 and nut 15. If the slack is insufficient the brake shoes are applied before the projection 13 engages the stop 11, and during further movement of the lever 5 and sleeve 9, the spring 22 is compressed until the stop 11 is engaged, when as the sleeve is now held the chamber 17 moves sufficiently against the spring 25 to separate the conical surfaces 23, 24 allowing the nut 14 to engage the rod 8 against which it is then forced by the conical surface 18 of the chamber to apply the actual braking pressure after a piston stroke determined by the distance between stops 10, 11. In release all the parts return to the original position. If the slack is excessive, the sleeve 9 reaches the stop 11 before the shoes engage, the nut 14 then engages the rod 8 and draws it through the nut 15 held stationary by abutment 21, until the shoes are applied. In release, the rod 8 is held by the nut 15 after it has returned to an extent determined bv the distance between stops 10, 11 and the chamber 17 moves the nut 14 over the rod, the effective length of which is thus shortened.
