Abstract
1,150,076. Overrun brakes for trailer vehicles. P. HAHN. May 5, 1966 [ May 5, 1965], No. 19933/66. Heading F2E. An overrun brake control for trailer vehicles comprises a coupling rod connected between a tractor vehicle and an hydraulic damper on the trailer, the damper being of the oleopneumatic type which is provided with a compressed air chamber 9, separated from the hydraulic fluid by a free piston 10, to provide initial resistance to collapse of the towbar assembly, a trailer brake lever or levers being acted on by a force derived from that acting on the coupling-rod through a parallel connection, e.g. a spring, so arranged that the derived force is different. As shown, a spring 16 is arranged in parallel with the damper and acts on lever 11 of the trailer brake linkage whenever movement of the coupling-rod 2 occurs, whilst the damper 7 acts directly between the tractor and trailer. For this purpose, the coupling rod 2 supports a tube 3, which slides within a tube 6 secured to the trailer, and has an extension-rod 15 extending rearwardly from it to connect with the piston rod 21 of the damper 7, the latter being secured at 8 within the tube 6. Spring 16, which surrounds the rod 15 and is enclosed within a tube 12, acts on the lever 11 via a collar 13 which includes pins 14 engaging slots in bifurcations of the lever 11. Extension of the coupling is limited by a stop-ring 18 and interposed resilient ring 19. The relay lever 11 is pivoted at 26 on a clamp 28 secured to the tube 6, and acts on a rod 17 coupled to the trailer brakes, the lever giving a mechanical advantage of more than 2:1. A pneumatic or hydraulic slave cylinder may also act directly on the trailer brakes under control of the tractor brake system. A hand-brake lever formed by a pair of lever arms 23 is also pivoted at 26 and engages with play in extensions of the coupling pin which connects the linkage 17 to the lever 11. A pawl 26 on the hand-brake lever engages a ratchet 27 formed on the clamp 28. A chain 25 is connected between the lower end of the handbrake lever and the tractor to apply the brakes automatically if the coupling should become disconnected.
