Abstract

175,727. Hiscutt, W. R. R. Nov. 17, 1920. Compensating for wear.-The wear or slack in vehicle brakes is automatically taken up by a device, interposed between the brake lever n and the cam b, comprising two oppositely-acting clutches. When the brake-lever n is operated the collar n<5> thereof revolves on the brakeactuating shaft a and the teeth n<1> engage teeth k<1> and rotate the sleeve k and the shaft a to which it is keyed. If excessive wear has taken place a tongue k<2> bears against the lower edge of slot h<2>, rotates the loose sleeve h on the shaft a, and causes the teeth h<1> to ride over teeth g<1> on a sleeve g rigidly connected to the brake casing c, the sleeve h sliding axially against action of a spring m. When the brakes are taken off the teeth g<1> and h<1> remain engaged, the upper edge of the slot h<2> engages the tongue k<2>, and the teeth k<1> ride over the teeth n<1>, the collar n<5> sliding axially against the action of a spring fitted between it and the part d. A lever t on the shaft a indicates the amount of wear.
