Compensating for wear ; force - transmitting mechanism.-In a slack-adjusting device for brakes of railway vehicles &c., a ratchet-wheel operated by a pawl on the brake lever is provided with an eccentric cam-surface adapted to adjust the effective length of a link in the brake mechanism. Fig. 4 shows the position of the parts when the maximum amount of slack has been taken up, the ratchet-wheel 10 mounted on the lever 12 being formed with a cam-slot 15 engaging a pin 29 on a link 28, which is connected to the other lever 26 and carries a locking-pawl 32 pressed by a spring 33 into the teeth of the ratchet-wheel. The lever 12, operated by the pull-rod 14, carries a pawl 34, which engages the ratchet-wheel and, when sufficient wear occurs, takes up a tooth thereon as the brakes are applied, the release of the brakes causing the wheel 10 to be rotated so as to shorten the effective length of the link 28. The pin 11, by which the wheel 10 is mounted on the lever 12, slides in a slot 30 in the link 28. Fig. 6 shows another arrangement in which the brake cylinder 37 operates the piwl lever 43 of a ratchet-wheel 42 formed with two slots connected by rods 44, 45 to the ratchet-wheels 10 at the two ends of the vehicle. In another form, the lever 12 is pivoted at its lower end to a fixed point, and the link 28 is connected directly to the brake block. Fig. 8 shows the apparatus arranged between two floating levers 46, 47 operated by the brake cylinder 37. Two wheels 10, arranged side by side, may be used, the link 28 passing between them.
