Hand actuation ; force-transmitting mechanism.-Brakes of the railway-wagon type are constructed so that the blocks are moved into contact with the wheels by auxiliary levers, the braking pressure being afterwards applied through main levers having fixed fulcra. The hand-levers 1 are secured upon a shaft 2 provided with an arm 3, which is connected by a link 4 to an arm 5 provided on the brake shaft 6 carrying the usual tumbler lever 9, 10. The lever 9, 10 is connected at its ends to boxes 12, which slide on the ends of the brake rods 11 and carry springs 13, as shown in Fig. 4. The shaft 2 is provided with an additional arm 16 which is connected by a link 17 to a main pressure lever 18, which is pivoted on the brake shaft 6 and carries pawls 19 adapted to engage ratchet teeth 20 on the brake-rods 11. The hand-lever 1 is locked by a rack 25 and a spring catch 24 actuated by a lever 22. During the first part of the application of the brakes, the blocks are moved against the wheels by the arms 3, 5, link 4, and tumbler lever 9, 10 acting through the springs 13, the ratchets 20 slipping under the pawls 19; but when the blocks contact with the wheels, the pressure is applied through the lever 18 and pawls 19. The springs 13 act to release the brakes. Compensating for wear is effected automatically by the pawls 19 and ratchets 20 described above.
