Force - transmitting mechanism; hand-actuation. -In brakes for railway wagons &c., which can be applied by independent levers extending to opposite corners of the wagon, levers on the usual crossshaft are connected by links to levers which are only engaged by the handlevers when turned in one direction. A ratchet- and-pawl locking-mechanism is also provided, which can be released from opposite corners of the vehicle. A lever 16 on one end of the cross-shaft 13 is connected by a link 18 to one end of a lever 20 pivoted about a pin 26 mounted in brackets 24, 25. The other end of the lever 20 has a lug 28 to engage the lower side of a hand-lever 14, which is also pivoted about the pin 26. A hand lever 15, extending to the opposite corner of the vehicle engages a lug on a lever 21, similar to the lever 20, which is connected by a link to a lever on the other end of the shaft 13. The brakes are held off by a spring 32 acting on a lever 33 on the cross shaft, and the lever 16 and corresponding lever at the opposite side of the wagon may have weights 34 to balance the handlevers 14, 15. The lever 20 is formed with a ratchet-wheel 36 which is engaged by a pawl 37 on a transverse shaft 38 to lock the brakes on. The shaft 38 has opposite levers 41, 42 connected by rods 43, 46, to lavers 45, 48 mounted on the handlevers or upon the wagon frame, so that the pawl 37 may be released from the ratchet-wheel from either corner of the vehicle. The ratchet-wheel 36 may be formed on the lever 21 instead of the lever 20, or two ratchet-wheels, having their teeth in staggered relation, may be used with two independent pawls, the releasing-mechanism being arranged to raise whichever pawl is in engagement. Pivoted catches 49, 50 forming rests for the levers 14, 15 are provided on the side of the wagon.
