5827. Adams, F. E., and Bythway, E. M. March 8. Hand actuation; force-transmitting mechanism. - In eitherside brakes for railway wagons &c., the brakes are locked on or off by a rack i extending from an arm h on the brake-shaft a and engaging a fixed bracket j, and main hand-levers c, c' at diagonally-opposite corners are connected by the mechanism shown in Fig. 3. The rack i is formed with a notch i<2> which retains the brake off, and with teeth i<1> which lock the brake on, and is disengaged by a lever l which is fitted with a roller engaging under the rack, and is operated by levers and rods m connected to a shaft n fitted with a handle o. When the main lever c is raised to release the brakes, it engages a catch p connected to the lever o, so as to raise the rack i and ensure engagement of its notch i<2>. The locking-gear is operated from the opposite diagonal corner by a handle o<1>, Fig. 3, connected by arms u and a rod u<1> with the cross-shaft n. The main lever c<1> diagonally opposite the lever c is mounted on a shaft a<1>, an arm v<1> on which is provided with a pin v<3> engaging a curved slot formed in an arm v on the brake shaft a. Instead of the lever c<1>, a lever c<2> may be provided on the opposite end of the shaft a, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, a corresponding unlocking-lever o<2> being fitted at the opposite end of the shaft n. The hand-operated gear actuates brake blocks g at one side only of the vehicle, through the usual lever e and rods f. The brake blocks at the other side of the vehicle are connected to a sleeve, which is mounted loosely on the end of the shaft a and connected to the power apparatus, a fixed collar being provided for preventing movement of the sleeve along the shaft. The power apparatus may be applied to the hand-brake gear.
