Hand and foot actuation. - In a brake-lever arrangement for railway and other vehicles in which a new fulcrum is brought into play during the application of the brakes in order to increase the leverage, the new fulcrum is constituted by one or more teeth integral with one of the levers and adapted to engage a fixed rack. Fig. 1 shows a wagon brake in which a hand-lever d is connected by links c to a lever a on the cross-shaft. When the lever d is lowered, it remains in alinement with the lever a until the brake blocks encounter the wheels, after which it swings about its connecting-links so as to bring a pawl g at its end into engagement with a toothed rack h. The pawl g then forms a new fulcrum for the lever d. A modification is described in which a projection on the lever d is pivoted within a loop formed by bending the end of the lever a. A compression spring arranged between the projection and the end of the loop maintains the two levers a, d in alinement until a predeternined resistance is met, whereupon teeth formed on the end of the lever d come into engagement with teeth on the convex side of the rack h. Fig. 3 shows another modification in which the lever d, which is pivoted at p to the lever a, has a projection q engaging the underside of the lever a to keep the two levers in alinement. To change the leverage, the lever d is pressed sideways so as to disengage the projection q and bring a tooth r on the lever d into engagement with teeth s cut on the inside face of the rack h. Fig. 5 shows a hand-brake for a road vehicle, in which teeth o on the lever d are adapted to engage a toothed rack h when the resistance of a tension spring v is overcome. A foot-brake is also described in which the levers are similar to those shown in Fig. 5 but with the spring v replaced by a plate spring. Force-transmitting mechanism -Fig. 6 shows an arrangement for use with a vacuum brake, the levers a, d being initially kept in alinement by a spring m.
