Abstract
12,087. ChavÚriat, V. June 3,1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Brakes.-In a device for taking up slackness in the brake rigging due to wear, a block or cam 4 is pivotally mounted one of a pair of pivoted levers 1, 2 with the cam-face resting on the other lever, and is provided with ratchet teeth 8 which are engaged by a pawl 6 pivoted to the frame of the vehicle. The cam 4 is pivoted at 5 between the arms of the double lever 2, and the lever 1 passes between these arms. When the brake is applied, as in a vacuum brake, by raising the lever 1 and turning it about the shaft 3, the cam-block moves the lever 2 connected at 10 to the brake rigging. If there is slackness in the rigging, the excessive movement of the levers 1, 2 and the cam causes the pawl 6 to engage the next succeeding tooth of the ratchet-wheel 8, and to rotate the cam when the brakes are released and move the levers 1, 2 farther apart. As applied to the Westinghouse arrangement, the cylinder levers 14, 15, Fig. 5, are pivoted together at 15<a>, and, in the equalizing-arrangement shown, the pawls 6 are carried by bell-cranks 17, connected together by a rod 19. If the brake cylinder 11 is used for applying the brakes at one end only of the vehicle, the rod 19 is connected to the truck frame. When the piston-rod 12 moves outwards, the free ends of the levers 14 move inwards so that the bell-crank levers 17 are rotated, and if the movement is excessive, cause the pawl 6 to engage with the next tooth on the ratchet. The release of the brakes then causes the cam to be turned to move the levers 14, 15 apart.
