Abstract

324,183. Hall, F. H. Dec. 12, 1928. Compensating for wear; hand, foot, and personal actuation.-In a self-adjusting brake mechanism a ratchet device operated by the pedal controls the movement of a slack adjuster in the brake rod, the adjusting device being operated after the ratchet device has been retained in an advanced position and on the return stroke of the pedal. The brake pedal 4 is pivoted at 31 and is connected to the brake by a rod 8, slack adjusting device 15. 16 and rod 14. The slack adjuster comprises a double pulley block 15, 16 around which passes a wire rope 17, one end being connected to the block 16 and the other to a drum 19 carrying a ratchet wheel and loosely mounted on the pivot 31. Two pawls engage the ratchet wheel, one of which 22 is mounted on the brake pedal and the other 24 on a, fixed part of the chassis. When slackness has developed in the brake gear and the brake pedal is depressed the ratchet wheel on the drum 19 turns and the pawl 24 slips over a tooth. On release of the brake pedal the drum is held by the pawl 24 and the pawl 22 slips over a tooth when the pedal reaches its normal position and the slack is taken up. As applied to the lever described in Specification 301,943 the ratchet wheel 21 and drum 19, Fig. 1, is mounted on a pivot 3 and the cable 17 is passed through a pin 10 securing the rod 8 to the block 15. The pawl 22 is mounted on the brake pedal 4 and the pawl 24 on the link 1 which is pivoted at 2 to the chassis or engine case. The pedal 4 and link 1 are drawn together against stops by a spring 6 and a stop 7 for the link 1 is mounted on the chassis. The pulley blocks 15, 16 are enclosed in a fabric casing 26 supported on a spring 27 retained between end plates 28, 29. On application of the brake the brake pedal 4 and link 1 move together to take up the brake clearance and slack until a sufficient resistance is offered by the brake, or the link 1 engages the stop 7, thereafter the pedal 4 moves relatively to the link 1 about the pivot 3 to apply the brake at an increased leverage. When excessive slackness is present, the movement of the pedal 4 about the pivot 3 rotates the ratchet 21 so that the pawl 24 engages a fresh tooth. On release of the brakes the pawl 22 slips back one tooth and the slack is taken up. According to the first Provisional Specification the pawls 22, 24 may operate ratchet wheels.
