Hand and foot actuation. - Brake operating mechanism comprises a slidable toothed bar 3 connected by a cable 4 to the brake and adapted to be operated to apply the brake by both forward and rearward movements of a lever 10 by means of pawls 11, 11<a> pivoted above and below the pivotal point 10<a> of the lever. A sliding plate 6 is adapted to hold the bar 3 in the applied position and is released by a spring pressed pedal 8. The pawls are adapted to be disengaged by a rod 13 connected to the pawl 11 and provided with a stop 12 engaging under the pawl 11<a>. A further sliding plate released by a foot pedal to hold the bar in applied position is shown in a modification. The mechanism is mounted in a frame comprising a plate 1 bent in the form of an inverted U having distance pieces 2 between the lower edges which act as rollers for the bar 3 to to run on. A shield 14 secured to the lever 10 prevents entrance of dirt. When the mechanism is used to apply a brake on a trailer the cable 4 runs between pulleys or through a, flexible casing or the cable is wrapped on a pulley on a shaft at the rear of the tractor and another cable wrapped in the opposite direction on another pulley on the shaft leads to the trailer brakes. The brake is looked on by bringing the end of the lever against a stop 15 after the brake has been applied when release of the slidable plates will not release the brake but the lever 10 must be moved back so as to bring another tooth of the bar under the slidable plate 6 when the pawls 11, 11<a> can be raised from the teeth of the bar 3.
