Abstract

July 5, 1926 Hand, foot, and personal actuation.-A brake operating means for a vehicle comprises a slidable toothed bar or rack 3 connected by a rod or wire 4 to the brake, a hand-lever 10 with pawl 11 to engage the rack to project same forward to apply the brake, a. sliding plate 6 adapted to engage the rack in its displaced position, a foot lever 8 for disengaging the plate 6 from the rack and a hand-grip 12 on the lever 10 for releasing the pawl 11 from the rack. The hand-lever 10 is pivoted at 10<a> between the two sides of a bent plate 1 which also form guides for the rack 3. The plate 6 slides in guides 5<a> and is mounted at one end on a pivoted lever 8, the plate being pressed downwards by a spring 9 acting on the lever. The brake is applied by repeated strokes of the hand lever 10, the rack being retained after each stroke by the plate 6. The brake is locked by projecting the rack 3 forwards where it is retained by the plate 6 and then moving the lever 10 forwardly until the lower end abuts a stop 15 with the pawl 11 engaged in a tooth of the rack. If the plate 6 is raised the pawl 11 still retains the rack so that the brake is not released. The brake is released by moving the rack forwardly by the hand-lever 10 to the extent of one tooth where it is retained by the plate 6- The pawl 11 can then be released from engagement with the rack.
