Abstract
708,607. Internal shoe-drum brakes. BRISSON, L. C. July 23, 1952 [Aug. 18, 1951], No. 18699/52. Class 103 (1) The invention relates to automatic clearance adjusting devices for internal shoe-drum brakes of the type in which a threaded member 1 is actuated by a toothed gear 4 which advance it by one tooth for each application of the brake. In the device, as shown in Fig. 1, each application of the brake caused a downward movement of the member 3 which carries with it the threaded sleeve 2 and gear member 4. The pawl 8, which as shown in Fig. 3, is pivoted to a fixed part of the brake 10, is normally pressed into engagement with teeth 5 on the top face of member 4 by a spring 11. The downward movement of member 4 thus causes the pawl 8 to slip a tooth and rotate the member accordingly. In order to provide a more sensitive arrangement than heretofore the member 4 is arranged to rotate sleeve 2 by an amount corresponding to only one tooth for each full rotation of the member 4. This form of operation is obtained by coupling the member 4 and sleeve 2 by a spring pressed finger 13 which engages ratchet teeth 12 on the sleeve 2 only when the outer end of the finger 13 is engaged by a boss 15, as shown in Fig. 2, on the inner surface of the recess in the fixed brake part 10.
