Abstract

1327199 Slack adjusters GIRLING Ltd 16 Nov 1970 [17 Nov 1969] 56063/69 Addition to 1191320 Heading F2E In an internal shoe drum brake as in Specification 1,191,320 the pawl 30 forms part of a lever 32 pivotally connected to the operating arm 14, and the pawl tip has a degree of free movement towards and away from the ratchet (24), Fig. 1 (not shown) a spring 40 acting on the lever to bias the tip into engagement with the ratchet. One end of the spring 40 is connected to pawl 32 and the other end passes through a hole 53 in arm 14 and is secured thereto on the other side so that a small component of tension in spring 40 acts in a direction parallel to the axis of a pin 20, one section 48 of which passes through lever 32, the lever thickness being less than the length of section 48. Pawl lever 32 is biased away from a flange 47 of the pin 20 through a distance X and against lever 32 through which a section 49 of pin 20 passes and pawl 30 is thereby lightly biased into engagement with ratchet (24). On release of the hand brake after pawl 30 has advanced wheel 24, the pawl 30 passes over one tooth to engage the next causing lever 32 to rock about an axis transverse to that of the brake, extending through the point of engagement between a part 46 at one end of lever 32 and arm 14 and between lever 32 and pin 20.
