Abstract

1,246,418. Shoe drum brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 6 May, 1970 [16 June, 1969], No. 30297/69. Addition to 1,220,992. Heading F2E. In an internal shoe drum brake including a back plate 1 extending substantially perpendicular to the axis of the brake drum and a pair of opposed brake shoes 4L disposed adjacent one face of the back plate, one end of each shoe having engagement with an abutment surface fast to the backplate and a brake return spring 6 acting on the two shoes to urge them towards each other, the ends of the spring are coupled to the respective shoes each by means of a coupling member 7 which reacts with the back plate through the intermediary of a tie member 10 and with the respective brake shoe to urge the brake shoe towards the said one face of the back plate. As shown, the member 7 acts as a lever with a part thereof forming a fulcrum 11 against the brake shoe and engaged by a head 13 of the member 10; the end of the spring 6 is engaged by a hook 12. In modifications, (a) the member 7, Figs. 8 to 12 (not shown), has an inclined ramp portion which acts either against the brake shoe or the member 10. The member 7 may be formed integrally with the web 9 of the brake shoe.
