Abstract

946,209. Internal shoe-drum brakes. GIRLING Ltd. July 26, 1960 [May 5, 1959], No. 15315/59. Heading F2E. In an internal shoe-drum brake having at least one arcuate shoe arranged to be urged towards the drum at one end by actuating means and to engage an abutment at the other end, the latter end of the shoe is held against the abutment by a tension spring 7 and acting through a lever 8 pivoted at 9 to the brake back plate to give an increased force at the shoe abutment face. Fig. 1 shows a two-leading shoe type of brake wherein one end of each shoe abuts against an inclined abutment 6 formed on the end of actuating cylinder 3 for the other shoe. The end of the shoe is kept against the abutment by a force of about 5 times the force pulling the other end of the shoe on to the retraction stop 4 formed by snail and adjuster 4. This is achieved by providing the lever 8 with a lug 10 to engage in aperture 11 in the web of a shoe closed to its non-actuated end, the other end of the lever 10 being provided with the tension spring 7 attached at one end to one shoe near its actuated end and at the other end to the lever 8 pivoted to the back plate 2 at 9. Other embodiments are disclosed in the Specification for instance, in place of the lug 10 engaging in an aperture in the brake shoe web, there is a pin in the brake shoe web engaged by the side edge of the lever 8.
