Abstract

925,593. Internal shoe-drum brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Jan. 20, 1960 [Oct. 21, 1958], No. 33577/58. Class 103 (1). In an actuating means for brake shoes of internal shoe drum brakes of the type in which two arcuate shoes co-operating with a rotatable drum are mounted to rock or slide at one end on a stationary anchorage on the brake backplate 11 and are adapted to be separated at the other end by an hydraulic brake cylinder 10 with which is associated a lever 19 for separating the shoes mechanically for parking, the lever 19 is mounted for rocking or pivotal movement about a fulcrum formed by nose 29 on the lever abutting hardened block 22 in a recess in the cylinder 10 situated on that side of the cylinder remote from the brake backplate 11 and an intermediate part of the lever engages through transverse pin 23 with a free piston 16 coaxial with the working piston 14 and co-operating with one of the brake shoes 17, the outer end of the lever 19 extending through an opening in the brake back-plate for connecting to a vehicle hand brake lever through suitable rigging 25, 26. The lever therefore acts as of the second order. When the brake is applied mechanically, the lever 19 is moved angularly about its fulcrum and advances the free piston 16 to apply one brake shoe, the working piston 14 remaining stationary, and the reaction on the fulcrum 22 moves the cylinder assembly in the opposite direction to apply the other shoe. The brake may be applied hydraulically through fluid connection 28. In an alternative construction (not illustrated) the free piston 16 is omitted and the actuating lever 19 engages the web 17 of the shoe directly.
