Abstract
603,932. Internal-expanding brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Nov. 6, 1945, No. 29516. Convention date, Dec. 13, 1944. [Class 103 (i)] In a brake having sho s 14 and 16 which are normally expanded by pairs of pistons such as 26, 36 in hydraulic cylinders 18 and 20, and which anchor on one or other cylinder according to the direction of drum rotation, additional mechanical means for expanding the shoes comprise a lever which acts directly on one shoe and through the pistons 26, 36 on the other shoe. As shown, the shoes anchor through flanges 28 on the piston 26 and the pistons in the cylinder 20, but a separate anchor plate 38 is provided for the upper end of the shoe 16 and slidably encloses a projection 40 on the piston 36. The latter is slotted to receive the end of the shoe and is engaged by intermediate portions of a bifurcated lever 44 which embraces the shoe web. The upper end 52 of the lever engages the end of the shoe and the lower end is formed to receive a ball member on an operating cable 50. The cylinders 18, 20 are mounted in box-section torque-reaction members 22, 24 secured to the back plate, and the member 22 is provided with a ramp for the cable 50.
