Abstract

552,174. Drum brakes. BENDIX, Ltd., and IRVING, J. S. Oct. 22, 1941, No. 13588. [Class 103 (i)] In brake operating means comprising a wedge or equivalent movable by a fluid pressure operated piston in a direction at right angles to that of the ends of brake shoes to apply the brake the wedge or equivalent has a rocking and axially slidable engagement with the piston to permit slight movement with the shoe ends in a circumferential direction and to allow movement of the wedge independently of the piston for application of the brake by mechanical means. As shown, rollers 21 on the ends of tappets 17 slidable in a housing 12 secured to the back plate 1 of an internal drum brake and acting on the shoe ends 11 engage grooves in a wedge 23 the stem 24 of which has a ball-and-socket engagement with a piston 27. The cylinder with its pipe connections 31 is formed in a cover 14 which with the members 12, 13 are secured to the backplate by bolts 16. Mechanical means for actuating the wedge comprise a shoulder 34 thereon engaged by a forked arm 33 keyed to a shaft 35 carrying an external operating lever 36. The rocking movement permitted to the wedge enables the shoes to abut at either end on anchorages according to the direction of rotation of the drum. A pin slidable in slots in the piston may replace the spherical surfaces 25.
