Abstract

565,280. Brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Feb. 22, 1943, No. 2928. Convention date, April 20, 1942. [Class 103 (i)] A brake comprises a pair of brake shoes each arranged to anchor at either end according to the direction of rotation of the brake drum when applied by a pair of hydraulic motors acting upon the shoe ends, means for adjusting the shoes to compensate for wear and alternative mechanical applying means including a thrust member which serves both as an anchoring and adjusting means for a shoe. Idle movement in the mechanical applying means due to adjustment of the shoes is thus avoided. The shoes 13, 14 are normally applied by a pair of hydraulic cylinders 15, 16 and the anchors for the lower ends of the shoes are respectively a stop 22 fixed to the back plate 12 and the head 23 of a pin 24 that is adjustable by screwing into a fixed block 25. The anchors for the upper ends of the shoes are respectively a fixed member 27 and the head 29 of a pin 30 adjustable by screwing into the head 31 of a rod 33 slidable in a fixed block 32 upon which the head 31 is adapted to abut. The rod 33 acts also as a thrust member of the mechanical applying means which includes also a link 42 engaging at 43 the shoe 14 and a lever 35 connected to the rod 33 by a pin 37 and to the link 42 at 41. The lever extends through a slot 36 in the back plate and is connected at 45 to an operating cable. The connection between the lever and the rod 33 may instead comprise bearing surfaces formed on the inner edge of the lever and at the bottom of the slot in the rod which receives the lever. It is stated in the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 that the pistons of the hydraulic cylinders follow up the shoe adjustment.
