[Class 103 (i)] A fixed hydraulic cylinder 16, which has a floating action through thrust rods 18, is employed to apply brake shoes 11, 12 by acting upon levers 19, which are made to tilt so as to apply downward forces at 24 on the lower shoe 12 and, by means of turnedover parts 25, upward forces at 26 on the upper shoe 11. The shoes are arranged to anchor individually at opposite ends in forward and reverse braking, the upper shoe 11 engaging anchors 14, 15 at 39 and 40; and the lower shoe 12 at 41 and 42. The shoe return springs 46 and 47 are fitted with additional springs 48, 49, each acting on one shoe only, to hold the left-hand end of shoe I against its anchor away from the drum until the left-hand end of shoe 12 has made contact with the drum and to hold the right-hand end of shoe 12 against its anchor away from the drum until the left-hand of shoe 11 has made contact with the drum; this action is arranged to take place during forward motion to obtain speedy application of the shoes. In a modification the levers 19 may be pivoted to one of the shoes and connected to the other by pivoted links; also in another modification additional force-transmitting members may be interposed between the lower ends of the levers 19 and the ends of the lower shoe 12. An emergency brake-applying means acts upon levers 29a, which are pivotally mounted in slots of the backing-plate and engage in notches 28 of levers 19, by means of a cable.
