542,885. Internally-expanding brakes. PRATT, H. J., MANLEY, G. E., and GIRLING, A. H. G. Sept. 11, 1940, No: 14094. [Class 103 (i)] Expander mechanism for brake shoes of internallyexpanding brakes comprises a T-shaped housing 4 rigidly bolted to a fixed anchorage part of the brake and containing a hydraulically operated piston 7 acting upon a separate wedge-shaped expander 6 moved downwardly to actuate through anti-friction rollers 5, plungers 3a, 3b in order to apply the brake shoes to the drum, the expander 6 being movable in the direction of the spread of the shoes to take up wear, a spring. 9 in a bore of the piston 7 producing frictional resistance to lateral movement; this resistance normally acting at the upper and lower ends but being taken off the lower end when during braking the expander is forced against the piston 7 and so takes off the pressure from the lower end of the expander which normally bears against a plate mounted in the piston end.
