[Class 103 (i).] To permit operation of hydraulic brakes by two independent conduits, the brake cylinder a is freely-movable axially and is divided by a partition f into two compartments connected respectively to the two conduits l, m and each containing a piston b, bl connected to a brake lever c, e<1> or directly to a brake shoe. As shown, each lever is connected to a brake shoe c, c<1> adapted to be applied to a disc. If fluid is supplied to conduit m, the shoe c is applied by the piston b and the shoe c<1> by movement of the cylinder a and piston b<1> the lip t of which remains in contact with the cylinder. If, instead, fluid is supplied to the conduit l, the cylinder and piston b move together to apply one shoe and the piston b<1> is displaced relatively to the cylinder to apply the other shoe. The brakes in the case of a vehicle may thus be applied from opposite ends of the vehicle. Adjustment for wear is effected by stops r, r<1> the adjustment of which may be automatic and by the provision of a rotatable screwed piston-rod v screwed into the pivot w by which the rod is connected to the lever e<1>. Brakes comprising a pair of shoes engaging the interior or exterior of a drum and in which the pistons are directly connected each to a shoe are also shown. In the case of a vehicle, the two conduits l, m may extend to opposite ends or to the same end of the vehicle.
