Abstract

598,339. Brakes. BENDIX AVIATION .CORPORATION. Sept. 14, 1945, No. 23776. Convention date, Nov. 15, 1944. [Class 103 (i)] A drum brake comprises a support of channel or box section and a hydraulic cylinder formed of a length of tubing and extending through and welded to the side walls of the support. Adjusting means for the shoes are provided. As shown, a channel-section support member 28 is bolted to a vehicle axle flange 40 and is closed to form a box-section by a plate 34 positioned by nibs 36 bent in from the sides of the members to which the plate is brazed. A cover plate 46 for the drum 12 is provided. Cylinders 26 each comprising a length of tubing extend through the sides of the member 28 and at each end thereof and are brazed thereto. The cylinders are connected by a pipe 56. Fittings 52 brazed to the cylinders serve respectively for the inlet of the pressure fluid and for bleeding. The brake shoes 18, 20 anchor on the cylinders through flanges 38 on the pistons 22. One piston of each pair acts on the associated shoe end through a screwed rod 58 and adjustment of the shoe is effected by turning the piston by a serrated ring 61 which is held in position by a detent 62 attached to the support member 28 by ears 64. Release springs 48 for the shoes are attached to members 50 extending through the sides of the member 28.
