Abstract

1379225 Internal shoe drum brakes GIRLING Ltd 9 Feb 1972 [15 Feb 1971] 4678/71 Heading F2E An internal shoe drum brake comprises a pair of brake shoes 1, 2 and, arranged between and engaging an adjacent pair of ends thereof, two separate single-ended hydraulic wheel cylinders 11, 12 having their axes generally parallel, the wheel cylinders being floatingly supported by the shoes. The cylinders in use of the brake are fed from separate sources of fluid pressure. In the construction shown both wheel cylinders are floatingly supported by the brake shoes, each cylinder being provided at its closed end with a slotted spigot 19, 21, and the piston rod 20, 22 thereof being provided with a slotted outer end. The webs of the brake shoes rest in the slots. Alternatively the webs of the brake shoes may be engaged directly by the closed ends of the cylinders. The separate source of fluid pressure may come from a tandem master cylinder or simultaneously or independently operated master cylinders. The brake may be also actuated by a rotatable cam 10 by a cable 8. An automatic wear adjustment mechanism 5 is also provided.
