Abstract
439,894. Brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and CLENCH, E. C. S., Brock House, Langham Street, London. June 13, 1934, Nos. 17544 and 27937. [Class 103 (i)] A servo brake comprises a brake drum 21 adapted to be engaged by a relay shoe 19 carried by an arm 18 pivoted about the axis of the drum and serving as an operative connection transmitting drag movement of the drum to the main friction shoes 10, 11. A cam 16 on the lever 18 actuates a toggle 14 connected to the shoes 10, 11. The shoe 19 is operated by an hydraulic cylinder 22. In a modification the shoe 19 is operated by a roller on a lever operated by either cable or a fluid-pressure cylinder. A further modification shows two oppositely-pivoted shoes 19 joined by a hinging joint 50 and operated by a toggle 19 and a fluid-pressure cylinder 22. The cam 16 may operate the shoes 10, 11 by hydraulic means comprising a F-shaped unit forming cylinders for operating the shoes and a cylinder operated by a cam 16. In this arrangement the shoe 19 is shown constructed as an electromagnet and is electromagnetically attracted to the brake drum. Pipes may be led from the T-shaped unit to wheel-cylinders in other brakes and in a modification shown the units in the front brakes of a vehicle are thus connected to the rear brakes. The piping leading to the rear brakes is connected by a check valve to the piping connecting the master cylinder and front brakes in order that excess pressure in the rear brake piping may escape into the front brake piping and exert a brake releasing effort on the master cylinder.
