1,020,434. Brakes. H. TENES, E. A. TENES, and M. TAUSEND, [trading as ALFRED TENES MASCHINEN-UND ARMATURENFABRIK KOMM. GES.]. Oct. 24, 1963 [Oct. 30, 1962], No. 41998/63. Heading F2E. An internal expanding shoe brake has wheel brake actuators which are operative on the ends of spring returned brake shoes and which are movable relatively to the back-plate wherein the casings of two wheel brake actuators operative on the four brake shoe ends are guided in supports disposed on the back-plate. The brake actuator comprises a casing 18 one end of which abuts plate 5, the other end of which is guided in a support 8 and is spring-loaded. The casing contains a piston 24 operated by fluid pressure or by wedges 40 controlled by the hand brake. The piston receives a sleeve 26 threadedly engaging a slack adjusting pin 29. The outer surface of the sleeve carries a helical thread 30 engageable by ratchet teeth 28 secured to the casing 18. On operation of the brake, the ratchet teeth ride over the thread as the sleeve is forced from the casing and on return the sleeve is rotated to compensate for wear. The pin 29 and casing extension 21 contain slots which engage end parts of the brake shoes to prevent rotation of the pin and casing. The brake acts as a leading shoe brake in both directions of drum rotation.
