916,516. Adjusting fluid-pressure brakes. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO. Ltd. May 3, 1961 [May 10, 1960], No. 16472/60. Class 103 (1). A fluid cylinder adapted to be linked by a thrust rod 13 to the brakes of a motor vehicle has a built-in slack adjuster comprising a piston-rod, which has a forwardly-extending screw-threaded part 12 engaging an internal thread of the thrust rod 13, and a rearwardlyextending part 9 which is provided with a helical grove 11 engaged by a peg 10 formed on a ratchet wheel 5, the ratchet wheel being rotatable on the piston-rod but held against longitudinal movement by a plate 7 and cooperating with a pawl 6 mounted on the plate 7. When air or other fluid is supplied at 3 to move the piston 8 the ratchet wheel is rotated by the helical connection 10, 11, movement in excess of a predetermined amount causing the pawl 6 to ride over a tooth on the ratchet wheel so that on return of the piston the piston-rod is rotated through the helical connection 10, 11, in a direction to increase the effective length of the thrust rod 13 through its threaded connection with the piston-rod. The piston 8 is rotatable on the piston-rod and comprises a pressing 8a having a skirt defining an annular space in which are located a ring seal 8b and a felt ring 8c.
