Abstract

1,022,134. Fluid-pressure brakes; slack adjusters. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Dec. 15, 1964 [Jan. 31, 1964], No. 4197/64. Headings F2E and F2F. In a combined brake cylinder and slack adjuster the means connectible to the brake rigging is displaceable relatively to the axis of the piston to accommodate the rise and fall of that part of the rigging. The crosshead 35 is carried on a member 134 pivoted at 135 to one 8 of two relatively telescopic members of the adjuster. Two nuts 111, 112 on the threaded external surface of the member 8 have clutch faces 141, 142 engageable with faces 140, 121 on the member 9 attached to the piston 3, the nut 112 having a further face 117 engageable with the clutch face 118 of the sensing member 18. If the clearance in the brake linkage is normal then on activation of the piston by air pressure the sensing member will move leftwards with 8, 9 and abut the stop face 131 as the brake blocks engage the wheel. If the clearance is excessive further movement of member 9 engages faces 140, 141 so carrying 8 leftwards, the nut 112 spinning as slight clearance at the bearing 120 allows the faces 117, 118 to part and a gap opens up between the nuts, proportioned to the excessive clearance. On brake release the piston and member 9 move rightwards, the compressed spring 116 holding the sensing member 18 stationary together with nut 112, and member 8, the now-engaged faces 117, 118 holding the nut from rotation. The nut 111 now chases the face 140 carried on member 9 until that nut has moved to take up the clearance and abuts nut 112. Members 8 and 9 then withdraw together. Manual resetting of the adjuster is provided by releasable means 152 connecting the crosshead 35 to member 134. Two other embodiments described (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) are embodiments described in Specification 1,022,132.
