Abstract

951,381. Internal shoe-drum brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Aug. 30, 1960 [June 19, 1959], No. 21067/59. Heading F2E. In an internal shoe drum brake in which arcuate shoes located within a rotating drum fulcrum about one end on an anchor on a stationary back plate for both directions of rotation of the drum and are urged apart at the other end by an hydraulic or mechanical actuator, the non-actuated ends of the shoes are separated for adjustment by a wedge 21 which is movable between the shoe ends and of which opposite sides or faces are inclined at different angles such that when the wedge is advanced, the leading shoe is adjusted through a greater distance than the trailing shoe so that substantially the same clearance is maintained between both shoes and the drum. The shoes fulcrum at their non-actuated ends on opposed coaxial tappets 16, 17 and the wedge 21 is adjustable by rotation of screw threaded stud 23 which is provided with a frusto-pyramidal form to advance the wedge and spread the non-actuated ends apart to compensate for wear of the brake lining. The side of the wedge having the greater inclination is that co-operating with the tappet on which the leading shoe fulcrums and the difference in the inclinations of the two sides is such that the difference in the distances through which the two shoe ends are moved by the adjuster is directly proportional to the difference in the rates of wear of the linings carried by the leading and trailing shoes respectively.
