Abstract

1,128,671. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 19 Nov., 1965 [20 Nov., 1964], No. 47334/64. Heading F2E. In a disc brake of the kind in which friction pads adapted to engage opposite sides of a rotatable brake disc 18 are located in a movable caliper 10 which straddles a part of the periphery of the disc and which is mounted to swing about an axis substantially at right angles to the axis of the disc, one of the friction pads 26 is directly applied to the disc 18 by hydraulic or other actuating means located in one limb 14 of the caliper and the other friction pad 13 is secured to the other limb 12 of the caliper 10 and is applied to the other face of the disc by the reaction on the caliper, the drag from the directly operated friction pad 26 being taken by a pin 34 or bar slidably mounted in the caliper 10 and passing through an opening or notch 36 in the rigid backing plate 28 to which the friction pad 26 is secured. The inner end of the pin or bar 34 carries a friction pad 38 for engagement with the rotatable brake disc 18 such that when a mechanically applied lever 44 is rotated about its pivot 48 in an anticlockwise direction a cam member 40 pivoted to the mechanical brake lever 44 at 42 the friction pad 38 at the end of the pin or bar 34 engages the brake disc to constitute a mechanically actuated parking or emergency brake. The cam member 40 is provided with ratchet teeth 50 which are engaged by a spring pawl 52 to automatically adjust for friction pad wear in the mechanically actuated parking brake. The pin 34 takes up the drag forces experienced by the directly operated friction pad assembly 26, 28 when actuated by an hydraulic piston (24) and cylinder (22) arrangement. The axis of the pin 34 instead of being at right angles to the plane of the brake disc 18 as shown, may be inclined to that plane in a direction such as to provide a self-energizing or servo-action when the brake is applied.
