[Class 103 (i)] In a brake comprising a pivoted shoe or shoes a<1> that is or are applied to the interior surface of a drum bl by a hydraulic cylinder f<1> mounted on the outer side of the anchor plate d<1> with its axis parallel thereto, twisting action of the application force on a shoe is prevented by arranging the shoe pivot c<1> on the opposite side of the central plane of the shoe to that of the cylinder at a position such that a plane 8 containing the cylinder axis and intersecting the shoe pivot passes through the central plane of the shoe where the line representing the resultant of the application force and the reaction at the pivot is intersected by a line situated in the central plane and passing through the pivot axis in a direction at right angles to the pivot axis. The brake shown comprises a pair of shoes engaging a common pivot pin c<1> and each provided at the other end with a projection h<1> passing through a slot in the anchor plate and engaged by a thrust rod extending to one of a pair of pistons in the cylinder f<1>. The cylinder may instead be connected to the end of one shoe and contain a single piston connected to the other shoe. In a modification, the shoes proper are pivotally mounted each on the middle part of one of a pair of levers which are pivoted on the anchor plate at one end and connected to the pistons at the other end.
