Abstract

548,207. Brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. March 25, 1941. No. 4039. Convention date April 18, 1940. [Class 103 (i)] A brake operating device adapted to apply balanced forces to a pair of shoes within a drum comprises a pair of levers interconnected at their inner ends, connected respectively to a fixed pivot and to a hydraulic actuator at the outer ends and engaging the shoes intermediately. The brake shown is of the kind in which each shoe anchors at one end or the other during application, according to the direction of drum rotation. Adjacent each pair of adjacent ends of the shoes 14, 16 is mounted on the exterior of the back plate 12 by means of a boss 26 a hydraulic cylinder 24 to the cylinder and piston of which are respectively pivoted, levers 56, 46. The levers pass through slots in the back plate and the shoes and are connected by links 54. When the cylinder is operated, balanced forces are applied by the levers to the shoe ends and one of each pair of adjacent ends anchors against the flange 32 of a plate 30. The flange 32 surrounds a flange 28 on the back plate and the cylinder and plate 30 are secured by a screw 34.
