Abstract

541,617. Internal shoe drum brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and GATES, G. R. G. Dec. 2, 1940, No. 17167. [Class 103 (i)] Relates to internal shoe drum brakes of the kind in which a pair of shoes has between each pair of their adjacent ends a spreading device and a torque-resisting abutment, the shoes engaging with the abutment at either end, depending upon the direction of drum rotation, and thus both being capable of serving as a leading shoe. The brake is hydraulically operated and the spreading device 10 is a piston-andcylinder acting directly between the shoe ends, the other spreading device 11, as shown for example in Fig. 3, comprises a wedge device with sectors 33, pivoted on a link 32 itself pivoted on a pull-rod 36, acting upon inclines 31 of tappets on the shoe ends under the action of the hydraulic pistons 38 or of a mechanically-operated second pull-rod 47 connected to the first pull-rod 36 through a lost-nut-in device including a coupling- member 44. Each shoe is provided with an end portion 17 adjustable by means of a wedge device 66 actuated by a screw 65; the other end of each shoe carries a pair of strengthening plates 55. The spreading devices may serve as abutments.
