781,834. Combined disc and shoe-drum brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Dec. 12, 1955 [Jan. 19, 1955], No. 35642/55. Class 103 (1). In a combined disc and shoe-drum brake of the kind in which " flat shoes " 12, 14 are spread apart into engagement with the inner radial sides of a rotatable drum and the circumferential movement imparted thereto transmitted to produce radial applying movement of a shoe 16, the transmission means comprises a lever 50 pivoted at 52 so that for the normal anti-clockwise direction of drum rotation, for which the shoe 16 acts as a trailing shoe, the force transmitted from the pads 12, 14 is increased in the ratio A/B, Fig. 11. Thus, by this arrangement, the brake torque produced by shoe 16 acting as a trailing shoe will be substantially the same as that when the drum rotation is reversed and it acts as a leading shoe with applying force transmitted through strut 54 at a leverage ratio of A/C, Fig. 11. As shown in Fig. 4, the friction members 12, 14 are spread apart by a single piston and cylinder unit acting through articulated levers 18. The strut 56 incorporates automatic adjustment mechanism for the shoe movement. Specification 758,882 is referred to.
