Abstract

780,402. Combined disc and shoe brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Dec. 6, 1955 [Dec. 20, 1954], No. 35000/55. Class 103 (1). A combined disc and shoe brake is actuated by supply of pressure fluid to cylinder 62 whereby movement of piston 66 acts through levers 46 to spread apart " flatshoes " or disc friction elements 38 into engagement with the sides of the drum, the elements 38 being linked by a pivotal connection, as in Fig. 3, to shoes 30 pivoted upon a pin 28. Circumferential movement of elements 38 on engagement with the drum, thus, according to the direction of drum rotation causes pivotal movement of shoes 30 to engage one or other of the friction linings 36 with the drum. The connection between the element 38 and the shoe-web 32, as shown in Fig. 3, is such as to allow the pairs of elements 38 to be spread apart. The actuator piston 66, Fig. 4, includes automatic adjustment mechanism for clearance of the disc elements comprising a curved spring washer 72 which engages the post member 60 and after being straightened during the brake application movement, springs back to its curved form to reset the clearance on release of the brake.
