Abstract
551,726. Brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Oct. 6, 1941, No. 12888. Convention date, June 5, 1940. [Class 103 (i)] Automatic adjusting means for brake shoes is adapted to be rendered ineffective when the shoe lining has been worn to a predetermined extent. A stop device may also be provided to prevent application of the shoes to the drum after the adjusting means have been rendered ineffective. The adjusting means may also be rendered ineffective by heating of the brake. A self-energising brake is shown in which the shoes 11, 12 anchor on a stop 14 and are connected by a device comprising a part 18 in which screws a part 16 engaging shoe 11 and which is socketed in a part 22 engaging shoe 12. A pawl 25 pivoted at 24 on the part 22 has a tooth 26 for engaging a ratchet wheel 19 on the part 18 and carries a thermo-sensitive bi-metallic arm 29 engaged by a pin 31 on a link 32 connected to a bell-crank 34 pivoted at 35 on the shoe 11. The bell-crank is connected also by link 36 to the anchor 14. Upon application of the brake by the hydraulic cylinder 15, the pawl is turned by the upward movement of the link 32 and if due to wear of the shoe linings the movement is sufficient the tooth 26 slips a tooth of the ratchet wheel. During the release movement the pawl is returned by a spring 28 and by engagement of the pin 31 in a slot in the pawl. Heating of the brake causes the end of the arm 29 to leave the pin 31 thus preventing adjustment since the pin 31 has lost motion in the slot in the pawl. The adjusting means are also rendered ineffective when the linings have worn down to a predetermined extent by the engagement of a cam 39 on the part 16 with a projection 40 on the arm 29 whereby the pawl is moved away from the ratchet 19. To prevent the shoes from being forced into contact with the drum when the linings have been worn down the piston rods or links of the cylinder 15 are provided with a projection for engagement with a stop fixed to the back plate 13.
