Abstract

430,072. Brakes. BARKER, G. G., 14, High Holborn, London.-(Bendix Aviation Corporation; 105, West Adams Street, Chicago, U.S.A.) Dec. 9, 1933, No. 9417/35. Divided application of which a Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 21, 1934. [Class 103 (i)] In brakes having automatic-adjustment means to compensate for wear, thermoresponsive means adapted to render the adjustment means inoperative are provided so that the adjustment is not affected by variation of the dimensions of the drum or other parts by heating. The brake shown comprises a pair of shoes 20, 22 articulated at 24 and adapted to anchor on one or other of two adjustable eccentric pins 94 according to the direction of rotation of the drum, the pins engaging slotted links 90, 92 pivoted to the shoes. The operating means for the. shoes comprises a lever 104 pivoted to the shoe 22 at 110 and connected to a cable 1041 and by an adjustable link 100 to the other shoe. The link comprises screened parts 100, 102, the part 102 carrying a ratchet wheel 120 engaged by a pawl 118 pivoted at 116 and urged into contact by a spring with one arm of a cranked lever 122 mounted on the pivot 116. A link 108 pivoted at 110 to the shoe 22 has a slotted connection with the lever 122 so that if in an application of the brake the movement of the shoe exceeds a predetermined amount the pawl slips a tooth of the ratchet wheel which is thus turned during the release movement to extend the link 100, 102. The movement of the pawl is limited by stops 124<1> to that corresponding to a single tooth of the ratchet. The thermoresponsive device comprises a thermostatic bar 126, Fig. 3 secured at one end to a bracket 128 fixed to the anchor plate 11 and engaging at its other end a lever 130 embracing the pawl 118 which is thus disengaged from the ratchet 120 when the temperature reaches a predetermined degree. The bar 126 may instead bear at its inner end on the plate 11 and on a lever at its outer end.
