Abstract

491,455. Adjusting brake shoes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., CLENCH, E. C. S., and BEESTON, J. P. March 3,1937, No. 6356. [Class 103 (i)] A device for automatically adjusting the shoe clearance of internal expanding brakes and which is unaffected by drum expansion, comprises a member carried by the shoe and engaging a stop on the back plate and having a part which is flush with the lining whereby it is forced inwards relatively to the shoe as the lining wears, outward movement of the member being prevented. In Fig. 2, a plunger 29 slidable in a housing 28 on the shoe web 25 extends through an aperture in the shoe flange 24 and lining 16. In the release position of the shoe the plunger engages a stop 23 extending through a slot 26 in the web 25 and which though normally fixed is adjustable, being carried by a pivot 27 on the back plate. As lining wear occurs, the plunger is forced inwardly by contact with the drum 17, outward movement thereof being prevented by a ball or roller 33 engaging the housing and an inclined face of the plunger. The plunger may be disposed radially of the drum or an equivalent member may be pivotally mounted on the shoe. In Fig. 4, a U-shaped member has one limb 38 projecting into an aperture in the shoe flange and lining while the other limb 37 is normally jammed in a housing 28 on the shoe by a spring 41 which may also be a shoe release spring. A projection 40 from the limb 38 normally engages the stop 23. Pressure on the end 30 of the limb 38 as the lining wears tends to free the limb 37 and permits the spring to slide it in the housing. According to the Provisional Specification a single adjuster may control the clearance of a number of shoes through links and levers.
