536,085. Adjusting brake shoes. PRATT, J. H., MANLEY, G. E., and GIRLING, A. H. G. Jan 24, 1940, No. 11741. Divided out of 524,180. [Class 103 (i)] In an automatic adjusting device for the shoes of internal expanding brakes a pull-off spring 23 is connected to the shoes 9a, 9b by a pair of gripping devices 20a, 20b the movement of which is limited by the co-operation of a slot 20d' in the device with a fixed stop 24a. When the brake is initially applied the inner edge of each slot 20d engages the stop and as wear of the shoe occurs the shoe slips relatively to the gripping device. When the brake is released the shoe returns a constant distance determined by the engagement of the outer edge of the slot with the stop as shown. Each gripping device comprises a pair of plates 20a, 20d urged by. a spring 21 on a pin 22 to grip the shoe web 9c. The stop comprises a flange 24a on a plate 24 fixed to the back plate 18, the flange having a recess to receive the plate 20b. A projection on each flange 24a passes through a slot in the shoe web 9c and spring 25 attached at one end to the projection bears on the web and thus restrains lateral movement of the shoe. The upper ends of the plates 24 serve as stops to limit the outward movement of the pistons of the operating cylinder 7 to prevent the metallic face of the shoes from engaging the drum if the friction linings are allowed to wear away completely.
