Abstract

764,680. Internal shoe-drum brakes. MARTIN, F. M., MARTIN, R. M., and MARTIN, M. M. March 14, 1955, No. 30677/55. Divided out of 35996/53. Class 103 (1). An internal shoe-drum brake is operated by actuation of a hydraulic brake cylinder 15 which acts upon expander levers 16 pivoted to the webs 21 of brake shoes 22 by pins 20. The upper ends of the levers 16 are adjustably secured by links 25 to anchor members 27 and the upper ends of the shoes 22 are also pivotally connected thereto by links 30 at pins 29. This arrangement of mounting the shoe is claimed to produce even wear of the lining and enables the friction surface to be extended over as much as 95 per cent of the drum area. Automatic wear adjustment devices as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 are fitted to both shoes. These comprise bifurcated levers 33 having pins 19 extending through slots 18 in the levers 16 and being pivoted to plates 35 by pins 34. When the levers 16 are expanding the shoes are able to move the plates 35 as well as the levers 33 but when the brake is released plates 35 are held fast by friction with the back-plate as a result of pressure by spring 37, and the brake shoes are set to a clearance determined by the distance between nut 48 and stop 47 on member 35.
