Abstract

603,163. Brakes. FARKAS, P. May 28, 1945, No. 13287. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1942. [Class 103 (i)] In an internally-expanding brake, wherein the shoes anchor on an abutment 25, the expanding means exert an oblique upward force on the upper end of the shoe 22 to increase the local pressure between that end of the shoe and the drum, and an oblique downward force on the adjacent end of the other shoe 23 to lessen the pressure at the point. As shown, the effect is produced by floating toggle levers 29, 30, the link 30 being inclined to exert pressure along the line r, the force being applied to the shoe 23 by the short arm of the toggle 29 in the direction of the line u. The shoes 22, 23 may be in halves articulated at 40, 41 and the thrust of the shoe 22 is transmitted to the shoe 23 through the wear-adjustment means. The link 30 comprises spaced parallel plates which engage a washer 31 on a stationary pin 32 to be guided thereby. The lever 29 is actuated by a member 28 on the brake cable. In a modification, the toggle mechanism is replaced by an inclined hydraulic actuator, pivoted to the shoe 22 at 35 and resting on an arm pivoted to the shoe 23 and having a positioning stop, whereby it acts as a bracket.
