Abstract
683,987. Internal shoe-drum brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. Sept. 26, 1951 [Oct. 4, 1950], No. 24217/50. Class 103 (i). In an internal shoe-drum brake of the type described in Specification 519,787, wherein the shoes are maintained in light rubbing contact with the drum when released, means 16 are provided which allow a very small free movement of the shoe away from the drum under the action of gravity and a greater movement against frictional resistance. The member 16 comprises a strip of resilient sheet material folded round so as to grip the parallel sides of the web 12 of a shoe under the action of a bolt 17 with spring-washer 18. The member 16 is located radially and laterally relative to the brake anchor plate 14 by a peg 21 rigidly fixed thereto and enjoying a hole 20 in one side of member 16 with a small clearance. On release of the brake the shoes may thus move away from the drum freely only by this small clearance but the spring friction of member 16 on the shoe web allows any degree of applying movement. In one modification, Fig. 6, a peg 44 on the shoe web 45 has a small clearance in an aperture 46 in a plate 47 friction clamped to the anchorplate by a pin 50 passing through a slot 49. The free movement may be of the order of 10 to 20 thousandths of an inch.
