Abstract

675,597. Internal expanding brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. Nov. 23, 1950 [Dec. 1, 1949], No. 30928/49. Class 103 (i). A brake of the kind in which opposed shoes are mounted within a rotatable drum and are not positively held out of contact with the drum when the brake is in the off position but are in light rubbing contact with the drum, as described in Specification 519,787, has two shoes each arranged to act as a trailing shoe in the normal direction of rotation of the drum, each shoe being adapted to fulcrum about its leading end or toe and being engaged by an actuator at its trailing end or heel. In the embodiment shown, single-ended hydraulic wheel cylinders 11, 12 are mounted on a backplate 10 and their pistons 17 engage the trailing ends of shoes 16, 18. The web at the trailing end of each shoe is retained laterally in a slot in a wheel cylinder and has a part-circular notch which engages a pin 14 about which the shoe pivots. Tension-springs 19, 22, disposed as shown, partially balance the forces acting on the shoes due to friction, gravity and residual hydraulic pressure but the resultant force is such that each shoe is in light rubbing contact with the drum. Openings 29 covered with wire mesh are provided for cooling purposes. The shoes may have a sliding or a sliding and rocking engagement with the cylinders 11, 12 at their leading ends instead of a purely rocking engagement, as shown.
