Abstract

1413644 Internal shoe drum brakes; wear adjustment; actuators SOC ANON DBA 22 Feb 1974 [22 March 1973] 8176/74 Headings F2E and F2F An internal shoe-drum brake has a leading shoe 12 and a trailing shoe 14 which are in floating contact at one end with a fulcrum block 26 and are operable at the other end by a wheel cylinder 24 having two pistons 52, 54 which cooperate with the respective shoes 12, 14, abutment means in the form of an adjusting lever 30 and a rod 34 and determining the minimum distance between the two ends operable by the wheel cylinder 24, and a friction ring 62 provided in the cylinder 24 to offer predetermined resistance to the sliding of the piston 54 in the cylinder 24. The ring 62 is held in place against a shoulder 58 in a blind bore 56 in the piston 54 by means of an annular chock assembly 64 and a washer 60, and the ring 62 slides frictionally on a pin 72 attached to a partition 66 fitted to the cylinder 24 and held in position by two washers 68. As shown, the lever 30 which is pivoted on shoe 12 has a toothed sector co-operating with a toothed sector of a pawl 32, also pivoted on shoe 12. A projection 46 on the end of rod 34 enters an opening 48 in the lever 30 and is normally a predetermined distance from the inner edge of the opening 48, so as to give a connection with predetermined play between the rod 34 and the adjusting lever 30. A hand brake lever 38 is pivoted on shoe 14 and contacts the end of a slot 36 in rod 34 and the flange 18 of shoe 14. During cylinder brake application the main braking action is by leading shoe 14. If the wear of the linings 20, 22 exceeds the predetermined play between rod 34 and lever 30 the lever 30 is pivoted, the pawl 32 being brought into contact with the lever 30 by a torsion spring 33, and the ends of the shoes nearer the wheel cylinder 24 are moved apart. When the pressure drops in the wheel cylinder 24 a return spring 44 lifts the shoes 12, 14 of the drum, and each shoe 12, 14 carries its respective piston 52,54 along as it returns-movement of the piston 54 is braked by ring 62 and this is said to prevent vibrations and to ensure automatic centring of the shoes 12, 14.
