Abstract

1327504 Internal drum brakes SA DBA 4 Oct 1971 [28 Oct 1970] 46019/71 Heading F2E An internal shoe drum brake comprises two shoes having between two adjacent ends an hydraulic cylinder unit actuator connected by a unidirectional wear adjuster, the unit being pivotally connected to the shoe ends, and the other ends resiliently held against an anchor fixed to a backing plate, further applying means being provided between the other ends. The wear adjuster comprises a threaded spindle 68 fixed to the cylinder 62 of the unit engaging a nut 70, abutting a single piston 66 in its retracted position by a spring 78 through a thrust bearing 76. When the piston 66 is actuated and moves leftwardly, a sleeve 82 is also moved and travels a distance "A" equivalent to a predetermined piston travel, until it abuts the thrust bearing 76 and pushes the nut 70 axially, causing the nut to rotate. Upon piston return, the nut 70 is held against rotation by contact with a sleeve 88 which is held against rotation by location of a lug 90 in a slot 83 of the sleeve 82. The piston 66 and cylinder 62 are floating to equalize braking torque of the shoes 12, 14. The other ends of the shoes 12, 14 are held against a projecting hub 44 of a central spider by spring 42 and are also mechanically actuated by a lever 48 operating, through a spindle in the hub, a cam 50 with a nose. The nose contacts a projecting portion of a disc 54 having diametrically opposite lugs 60 which in turn force apart the shoe ends. This causes the shoe 12, when the direction of drum rotation is anti-clockwise, to engage the drum, causing a subsequent similar action for the shoe 14, through the floating piston and cylinder. The hydraulic cylinder unit may comprise two pistons.
