Abstract
487,252. Internal shoe brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., HAYES, C., and CHOUINGS, L. C. Dec. 21, 1936, No. 35079. [Class 103 (i)] In an internal shoe brake, having shoes acting independently of one another, the shoes are mounted slidably on fixed pivots so that they have a pivoting and sliding movement the fulcrum of which lies on that drum diameter at right-angles to the drum radius bisecting the span of the shoe lining. The inclination alpha of the sliding movement is in such a sense that the sliding surface of the shoe when produced passes to that side of the drum axis remote from the body of the shoe and is usually between 20 to 35‹. The anchored ends of the shoes have slots engaging the flat sides of members 38 rotatable on a fixed anchor 40. In a modified form the ends of the shoes are provided with large circular holes occupied by collars having slats engaging sliding surfaces on the fixed anchor pin. In a further modification each shoe is formed with a V-shaped notch one side of which forms the sliding surface, the shoes being held in position by oval washers on each side. In a further modification the intermediate members 38 are omitted and the shoes slide directly on the anchor. The sliding surface may be provided with a hardened steelwear plate. In a further modification the two shoes of a brake are mounted on separate anchors. In a further modification the shoes are pivoted to slipper blocks sliding on inclined surfaces.
